1. Raw Material<\/h3>\n

The textual and graphic (and\/or audiovisual) material we have is the starting point of a web project. The higher the quality of the graphic and textual material provided by the client, the easier it is to structure and program a website with harmony and style.<\/span><\/p>\n

Obviously, designing a website for a fashion photographer is not the same as for a tire seller. While the former will deliver us a large portfolio with high-quality graphic material from which we can choose, the latter will probably have only a couple of brochures from their suppliers. Therefore, the first task for the web designer is to analyze the raw material available and provide feedback to the client with the following questions:<\/span><\/p>\n

– Do we have enough textual information to cover the basic areas of the website (Information for pages: Home – About Us – Products\/Services – News – Contact)?<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

– Do we have enough graphic material to cover the basic areas of the website (Slider, homepage highlights, pages, blog)?<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

If the answer to both questions is yes, there will be no problem, and we can jump directly to point 2. But if the material provided by the client is scarce or of low quality, we must report this issue and propose one or more of the following solutions to the client:<\/span><\/p>\n

a) Hire a professional photography or illustration service to provide quality raw material that represents their company and products.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

b) Purchase stock photos and\/or graphics from an image bank. Inform them of the cost of this service or, alternatively, tell them they can do this themselves.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

c) Illustrate the website with free photos and vectors (Freepik, Pixabay…) (Only recommended for service-based companies that can be conceptualized, for example: consultancies, legal offices…) and inform the client about the additional cost for the image and\/or vector search service.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

d) Ask the client to make an extra effort to obtain more graphic and textual material from their suppliers to cover the poor areas of the website and offer them web writing and redesign services (if they provide a supplier\u2019s dossier or a link to another website, we will have to extract the photos, catalog them, and structure all that information).<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

e) Request the client to do the photographing and\/or writing themselves to cover the poor areas of the website.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Or, if the client is unwilling to make this extra effort or pay more, inform them that the final result of their website will not meet the web designer\/developer\u2019s expectations and that any future website improvements will be charged separately once the work is finished.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is an important part that web designers often forget: educating the client not to become a toxic client: a client who overwhelms and changes their mind daily, an irrationally demanding client, or a \u201cneglectful\u201d client who does not provide material and keeps us tied up with a website for months.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Websites are not created by divine inspiration of the web designer\/developer. Structured information is needed, good quality graphic material is needed, and the collaboration and involvement of the client are essential.<\/span><\/p>\n

2. Structure and Content<\/h3>\n

“Less is more” is a motto that any self-respecting designer should adopt. Overloading the website with graphic and\/or textual information and filling it with various elements and colors everywhere is not synonymous with a complete website… it\u2019s rather synonymous with clutter and chaos.<\/span><\/p>\n

When an internet user searches for “something,” they expect to find direct, clear, and concise information, which in web language means: logical structure, well-defined information<\/em> and, generally, a harmonious and clear website<\/em> (without loudness, coherent, no strange fonts, no information clumping…).<\/span><\/p>\n

Therefore, review the website content and remove repetitive images and texts. Keep the essentials and emphasize the fundamental parts in H1 and H2 paragraphs. Remember that for perfect harmony, the graphic part compared to the textual should be about 50%-50%.<\/span><\/p>\n

3. Innovation and Originality<\/h3>\n

Once the basic structure is planned, the best part comes: giving innovation and originality to our website.<\/span><\/p>\n

Achieving the surprise effect in an environment with millions of competitors is not an easy task and will depend on the creativity, skill, and experience of the web developer.<\/span><\/p>\n

Whether we build the web environment from scratch or use templates, we must adapt the website to the client, looking for a good combination of colors within the corporate palette<\/em> and working ad hoc<\/em> on the website\u2019s CSS.<\/span><\/p>\n

Remember that small style details make the difference and a good idea is better than a hundred mediocre ideas:<\/span><\/p>\n
