Are you just getting started with WordPress and not sure where to begin? Don’t worry: uploading a post in WordPress is easier than it seems. In this guide, we explain step by step how to create, publish and optimise your post so that it gains visibility on search engines such as Google.
What is a WordPress post?
Before we begin, it’s important to clarify that a post is a piece of content published within your WordPress website’s blog. Unlike pages, posts are organised by categories, tags and publication date, and form part of the dynamic content of your site.
- Step 1: Access the admin dashboard
To upload a post in WordPress, the first thing you need to do is access the WordPress dashboard. You can usually do this by typing the following into your browser:
- Step 2: Go to “Posts” > “Add new”
Once inside the dashboard, follow this path from the side menu:
Posts > Add new
This will open the WordPress post editor, where you can start creating your content.
- Step 3: Write your post title
At the top, you’ll see a field for your post title. This title will be the first thing both your readers and search engines see, so make sure it’s clear, relevant and engaging.
Example: “How to Upload a Post in WordPress Step by Step”
- Step 4: Add your post content
Below the title, you’ll find the WordPress block editor (Gutenberg). Here you can begin writing the main body of your text and add different elements:
Paragraphs
Images
Headings (H2, H3…)
Lists
Buttons
Embedded videos
And much more!
💡SEO tip: Use relevant keywords naturally within your text (such as “how to upload a post in WordPress”). Add subheadings using H2 and H3 to organise your content and make it easier to read.
- Step 5: Add a feature image
On the right-hand side of the screen, you’ll find the “Featured Image” section. It’s very important to add a representative image for your post, as this is what will appear when it’s shared on social media or shown in blog previews.
Recommendation: use optimised images (low file size, good quality, and with a descriptive file name).
- Step 6: Categories and tags
Organise your post using:
- Categories: used to classify the overall content of your blog
- Tags: keywords that describe the specific topics covered in the post
This not only helps your readers find related content, but also improves your website’s SEO structure.
- Step 7: Review and preview
Before publishing, click the “Preview” button to see how your post will appear on your website. Check spelling, links, layout, and if everything looks correct, you’re ready to launch your content!
- Step 8: Publish the post
When everything is ready, click the blue “Publish” button (twice to confirm!). If you prefer to schedule it for later, you can click on “Publish immediately” and change the date and time.
Extra tips to rank well on Google
